NUTRITION: Stress

Cortisol is the horse’s main stress hormone that helps manage the body’s response to stress. Stress can come from many sources – stall confinement, isolation from companions, sleep deprivation, change in environment, food restrictions, travel to strange locations, excessive training and performing, pain and illness, exposure to toxins, etc.

Stress, of any kind, causes the adrenal gland to release the hormone cortisol, which manages the following:

• Use of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins

• Inflammation

• Blood pressure

• Blood sugar (glucose)

• Controls sleep/wake cycle

• Boosts energy to handle stress and restores balance afterward

Many performance horses experience an overload of cortisol. Managing cortisol is essential. Too much results in overweight horses with inflammation, no sleep, and no restoration of

balance in energy.

Research shows that horses fed ACHIEVE or ENGAGE by PRO Series (Valigura, Mississippi State University):

  • Experience reduced excessive whole-body stress following exercise.

  • Respond appropriately to exercise, while experiencing minimized excessive stress for faster recovery.

  • Have more managed and appropriate whole-body response to the stress of exercise.

  • Exhibit lower serum concentrations of cortisol compared to control horses.

  • Experienc cortisol returning to pre-exercise levels at the one-hour timepoint, while control horses took until the six-hour mark.

  • At the six-hour post-exercise timepoint, horses exhibit 68% lower levels of serum cortisol compared to pre-exercise levels.
